Sublimation vs Screen Printing vs Embroidery: Which Is Best for Team Jerseys?

The decoration method decides how your uniform looks, how it feels and how long it lasts. It also affects price. Here is a plain-English comparison of the four main methods used on team uniforms, so you can choose the right one for your sport and budget.

Sublimation

Sublimation uses heat to turn special ink into a gas that bonds with polyester fibers. The design becomes part of the fabric instead of sitting on top of it.

  • Look: unlimited colors, gradients, patterns and photo-quality graphics, edge to edge.
  • Feel: nothing on the surface, so the fabric stays light and breathable.
  • Durability: the design won't crack, peel or fade off, because it is in the fibers.
  • Limits: works on polyester fabrics, normally with a white or light base.

Best for: 7v7, basketball, soccer, volleyball, cycling, and any design with bold graphics. Most modern team uniforms are fully sublimated. See our custom 7v7 uniforms for examples.

Screen printing

Screen printing pushes ink through a mesh screen onto the fabric, one color at a time.

  • Look: solid, bright colors with crisp edges.
  • Feel: a thin ink layer on the surface.
  • Durability: good, but ink can crack over many washes, especially on stretchy fabric.
  • Limits: each color needs its own screen, so designs with many colors cost more.

Best for: simple logos on T-shirts, hoodies and practice wear, especially cotton.

Embroidery

Embroidery stitches the design into the fabric with thread.

  • Look: raised, textured and premium.
  • Feel: heavier and stiffer than print.
  • Durability: excellent, it lasts as long as the garment.
  • Limits: fine detail and gradients are difficult, and large designs add weight.

Best for: chest logos on polos, quarter-zips, varsity jackets and caps, and classic baseball lettering.

Heat transfer

Heat transfer presses a pre-cut vinyl or printed film onto the fabric.

  • Look: clean names and numbers in solid colors.
  • Feel: a smooth layer on top of the fabric.
  • Durability: good with proper care. Edges can lift over time if washed hot.

Best for: adding player names and numbers to jerseys that are otherwise plain, or small last-minute additions.

Quick comparison

  • Most design freedom: sublimation
  • Lightest and most breathable: sublimation
  • Most premium look: embroidery
  • Best for simple cotton apparel: screen printing
  • Easiest for names and numbers on plain jerseys: heat transfer

How decoration affects price

With sublimation, the price usually stays the same no matter how many colors or graphics you use, because the whole panel is printed in one pass. Screen printing gets more expensive as you add colors, since each color needs its own screen. Embroidery is priced mainly by the size of the design and the number of stitches, so large back designs add up quickly. Heat transfer is priced per name, number or logo applied.

For a full-color game uniform, this often makes sublimation the best value. For a one-color logo on cotton T-shirts, screen printing usually wins.

Caring for decorated uniforms

Whatever method you choose, good care makes uniforms last longer:

  • Turn jerseys inside out before washing.
  • Wash in cold water with similar colors.
  • Avoid bleach and fabric softener, which can damage performance fabric.
  • Hang to dry, or tumble dry on low heat. High heat can lift heat-transfer numbers and shrink some fabrics.

Can you combine methods?

Yes, and many teams do. A fully sublimated jersey can have an embroidered crest. A sublimated baseball jersey can carry a classic embroidered team name. Ask your manufacturer to recommend a combination based on your design, sport and budget.

Our recommendation

For game uniforms, choose sublimation unless you want a traditional look. It gives you unlimited colors at no extra weight and it lasts. Use embroidery for coaches' polos, jackets and caps, and screen printing for supporter T-shirts and hoodies.
